Vietnam’s Lobster Industry Moves Toward Sustainable Growth
Vietnam’s lobster industry is experiencing strong export growth, but rapid expansion is also exposing challenges related to seed supply, farming practices, environmental management, and traceability.
In the first six months of 2026, Vietnam exported approximately 11,790 tonnes of lobster worth US$584.6 million, representing a 44.1% increase in export value compared with the same period in 2025. China remained the dominant market, accounting for more than 98% of Vietnam’s lobster export value.
The strong performance highlights the growing economic importance of lobster, while also increasing the need for a more structured and sustainable production model.
Seed Supply Remains a Major Bottleneck
One of the biggest challenges facing Vietnam’s lobster sector is the shortage of quality seed.
National demand is estimated at around 100–120 million lobster juveniles annually, while naturally collected seed supplies only about 10% of this requirement. Artificial seed production technology for spiny lobster has made progress at the research level, but commercial-scale hatchery production has not yet been fully developed.
Limited seed availability has contributed to higher prices and increased the risk of unverified seed entering the farming chain.
Vietnam’s dependence on imported and wild-caught seed also makes the sector vulnerable to changes in regulations and supply conditions in source countries. Developing more reliable seed sources and strengthening official import channels will therefore be essential for long-term industry stability.
Expanding Farming Areas Create New Environmental Challenges
Lobster farming has expanded rapidly in Vietnam’s coastal areas, particularly in Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak, which together account for more than 95% of the country’s lobster cages and production.
The rapid increase in cage numbers has raised concerns over farming density, environmental carrying capacity, disease risks, and production management.
In several farming areas, production remains largely based on small-scale household operations. This makes coordinated management, environmental monitoring, traceability, and supply-chain integration more difficult.
To address these challenges, local authorities are moving toward better zoning of farming areas, registration of cages, marine-area allocation, and stronger cooperation between farmers and businesses.
Moving from Traditional Farming to Modern Production
Another important direction for the industry is reducing its dependence on traditional farming methods and fresh feed.
The use of fresh fish, mussels, and oysters as feed can increase pressure on marine resources and contribute to environmental pollution. It can also increase disease risks and make production efficiency more difficult to control.
Research into specialized industrial feed for Vietnamese lobsters has shown encouraging results. Trials have indicated that farmed lobsters can adapt to formulated feed while maintaining stable meat quality, with potential improvements in survival and disease management.
Further development of durable feed, automated feeding systems, and more efficient farming technologies could help reduce reliance on fresh feed and improve production consistency.
Traceability Becomes Increasingly Important
As Vietnam’s lobster exports continue to grow, traceability and proof of legal origin are becoming increasingly important.
Around 98% of Vietnam’s lobster production is exported, with China accounting for the overwhelming majority of export value. This concentration makes compliance with import requirements and transparent supply-chain management particularly important for maintaining market access.
Vietnam is also strengthening digital traceability across agricultural and aquatic production. A national traceability system has been progressively deployed, supporting better management of production areas, product information, and supply-chain data.
For the lobster sector, stronger traceability can help verify seed origin, farming areas, production practices, and product movement from farms to exporters.
Technology and Supply-Chain Integration Will Shape Future Growth
The next stage of Vietnam’s lobster industry is expected to focus less on expanding production volume and more on improving productivity, quality, sustainability, and market compliance.
Key priorities include:
- Developing reliable and legally sourced lobster seed
- Expanding artificial seed research toward commercial production
- Improving farming-area planning and environmental management
- Promoting stronger traceability systems
- Increasing the use of modern cages and farming technologies
- Developing specialized industrial feed
- Strengthening cooperation between farmers, processors, and exporters
- Diversifying export markets and improving value-added processing
With these measures, Vietnam has an opportunity to transform its lobster sector from rapid, resource-intensive growth into a more organized and sustainable seafood industry.
For international buyers, a stronger focus on traceability, responsible farming, and supply-chain transparency will also be increasingly important when sourcing Vietnamese lobster.
