Vietnam's seafood exports to Thailand have seen a significant increase in the first four months of 2025, rising by 34.4% compared to the same period last year. Thailand has become Vietnam's largest seafood export market within the ASEAN region.
Among the seafood products exported, pangasius (tra fish) is particularly favored. According to Vietnam Customs data, in the first half of February 2025, pangasius exports to Thailand reached over $3 million, marking a 280% increase compared to the same period last year. Cumulatively, by February 15, 2025, pangasius exports to Thailand totaled $9 million, a 24% increase year-over-year.
With this growth, Thailand has risen to become the second-largest importer of Vietnamese pangasius in Asia, following China. It is also the fourth-largest single market for Vietnamese pangasius consumption, after China and Hong Kong, the United States, and Brazil.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) notes that Thailand is a steadily growing market with expanding consumption of Vietnamese pangasius. The demand is driven by the robust development of the food service industry in Thailand, including a diverse array of restaurants, hotels, and eateries. Vietnamese pangasius is popular in ready-to-eat dishes, seafood buffets, and international-style restaurants.
Additionally, the geographical proximity between the two countries reduces transportation costs, enhancing price competitiveness compared to other suppliers. The ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (ATIGA) further benefits Vietnamese pangasius exports by reducing import taxes. Moreover, Vietnamese pangasius aligns well with Thai consumer preferences, as there is a growing trend towards white fish as a substitute for more expensive seafood options.
VASEP forecasts that pangasius exports to Thailand will continue to have significant potential this year, supported by high demand, favorable geography, and advantageous trade policies.
