Tuna Exports Regain Momentum in May 2025
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam's tuna exports in May 2025 reached nearly 90 million USD, up 26% compared to the same period in 2024. Overall, in the first five months of 2025, tuna exports totaled 378 million USD, up 22% year-on-year.
The United States continues to be Vietnam's largest tuna import market, accounting for 37% of total tuna export turnover. In May 2025, Vietnam's tuna exports to the US grew strongly by 44% compared to May 2024, reaching nearly 33 million USD. This growth was largely driven by increasing demand for frozen tuna fillets/loins (HS code 0304) and canned tuna.
In the EU market, Vietnam’s tuna exports also showed positive signs. In May 2025, exports to the EU reached over 16 million USD, up 28% compared to the same period in 2024. The main products exported were frozen tuna loins/fillets and canned tuna.
Tuna exports to CPTPP countries also maintained an upward trend, reaching over 12 million USD in May 2025, up 15% year-on-year. Japan, Canada, and Mexico were among the top buyers.
According to VASEP, the global demand for tuna is showing a recovery trend thanks to stabilized inflation and increased purchasing power in major markets. However, challenges remain due to high shipping costs and competition from other tuna-supplying countries.
Vietnamese tuna exporters are actively diversifying products, improving processing technology, and strengthening international trade promotion activities to maintain growth momentum in the second half of the year.
